Teaching

Projects > Teaching

English is the second language in the Maldives, and is taught in all the local island schools. Many of the teachers are Indian or Sri Lankan, as historically, there has not been the means to train Maldivians to teach English to an acceptable standard. Many of the foreign teachers are very capable of teaching the structural aspects of the English language, such as the grammar, but do not use the correct pronunciation and intonation that a native English speaker has. By providing conversational English, you can greatly enhance the learning experience, and will find an enthusiastic and willing classroom waiting for you!

The nice thing about taking a voluntary teaching project in the Maldives, is that all is required is a good standard of spoken English, some imagination in the classroom, and a desire to make learning fun! No need to have a TEFL or TESOL teaching qualification to join us as a teaching assistant.

We are looking for teachers and teaching assistants to cover almost all subjects and age groups from pre school to high school .

If you are a qualified teacher we have many schools throughout out the country awaiting your arrival!

It is a good idea to bring some of your own resources you can use to introduce yourself, such as pictures from home of family members – all great conversation starters, for basic lessons through to more advanced teaching. Any other resources you can find – such as lesson planners for different levels of English teaching, flashcards etc, can be found on many internet sites!

Let us know your interests and experience and we will match you up with the best possible voluntary post to suit your interests.
