For a nation of tiny islands spread out over 1000km long, obtaining a consistent and effective health care system is a difficult challenge.

There are two main hospitals in the capital of Male, and others are spread out across the country on larger local islands. In between, are clinics and health care centers, but some only offer basic medical services. Many Maldivians who can afford to, travel abroad for appropriate medical care.

The Maldives faces some challenging times ahead if they’re to achieve the key objectives of the Health Sector, which are:

Reducing the burden of disease, suffering and disability in order to improve the quality of life;
Increasing the healthy life expectancy of all Maldivians by reducing preventable deaths; and
Improving the health of present and future generations.

The overall strategy for overcoming these challenges has been the expansion of medical services to the outlying Atolls, as well as implementing extensive health education and health promotion. In addition to this, continuous training is to be provided for medical professionals, nurses, and health workers across the country to enable easy access to health care services.

One of the most serious constraints for the health sector is the lack of adequately trained personnel. Shortages in professionally and technically skilled Maldivians has led to the employment of foreigners in almost all areas of the health sector, further burdening the government. This has emphasized the need for appropriate development and of in-country training facilities.

Mission Maldives has a number of projects for volunteers to help with this sector in the Maldives.
We have positions for people to help out with auxiliary care in local hospitals and health centers, and some positions for fully qualified medical staff who may be looking to take a Sabbatical program from their career at home.

Also required are health education professionals to give lectures on the benefits of healthy nutrition and to educate people about preventative health care screening.
